varidogI had to mute r/hobbies over on Reddit. The subreddit consists of one question, "I need to get away from my phone. Suggest a hobby."
This subreddit is either their to feed the AI machine by asking the same question a million different ways, or people have achieve a peak sort of laziness. Either way, I couldn't take it anymore.
Anyone in a hobby is already going to the appropriate subreddit.
I have a pet theory, informed by Reddit in general, that YouTube is changing how people think about hobbies. YouTube requires eyeballs and they require engagement, so video makers invent conflict and warnings where none are required, all to generate topics, all to earn a living.
The result is that the younger set has a very distorted idea of hobbies, pastimes, and other such activities.
Hobbies are now being conflated with everything, when we have pastimes, activities, volunteering, crafting, sports, interests, lifestyles, and hobbies. Playing an instrument is an activity, watching others play is a pastime or an interest, while collecting them is a hobby. For example, "hobby writing" is an activity or a pastime.
Since human activity is so incredibly broad, and any of those things can be hobbies, it's hard to simmer them down to one thing.
In general, hobbies are concerned with finding, spotting, hunting for, collecting, documenting, having, storing, and displaying.
Being multimodal, they required different things at different times, so they're not always the same thing over and over.
The wonderful thing about hobbies is that they can be so incredibly broad and so incredibly personal, lasting for as long as they last. Most hobbies are informal, but a few have gotten big enough to have dedicated fandoms (card collecting, bird watching). They usually have specific cultures, which is its own interesting subject.
Answering that basic question, what hobby, is nearly impossible.
